About This Project

Innotech Windows + Doors, in collaboration with official partners Trocal®, Profine Group, and Cardinal Glass Industries, proudly sponsored Team Alberta's participation in the 2013 Solar Decathlon. Their project, Borealis, is a pre-fabricated modular solar home concept designed to offer sustainable and comfortable living solutions for resource industry workers in Western Canada.

The need for such a design stems from the thousands of individuals employed in remote regions of northern British Columbia and Alberta, particularly in the oil and gas, mining, and forestry sectors. This has led to a significant housing deficit, often resulting in workers residing in temporary camp accommodations. Borealis aims to alleviate this shortage by presenting a sustainable housing option that prioritizes both comfort and privacy.

Borealis is engineered to achieve net-zero energy consumption and incorporates a range of green building technologies. These include a 10 kilowatt photovoltaic array, solar thermal tubes, a bathroom living wall, and an energy recovery system. The structure comprises three modules – a central service module bordered by two residential modules – all equipped with Innotech triple glazed Terrace Swing Doors, Tilt + Turn Doors, and Tilt + Turn Windows, in addition to an Entry Door.
