Plan a lift-slide door opening before finalizing the order

A lift-slide door connects several decisions: the view, the route outdoors, the building opening and the way the door reaches the site. For an architect-led home or Ontario cottage, prepare an opening brief before choosing a final configuration.

Sources reviewed

Start with the opening brief.

Use one opening ID across the plan, elevation, section and quotation so the team can track the same assembly. Start with how the space should work. Then resolve the product, wall details and delivery plan together.

Describe the opening in everyday use

Mark the main walking route from the room to the terrace, deck or garden. Show furniture, dining chairs, curtains, exterior seating and nearby steps. Ask where people will stand to use the handle and where they will pass when the door is partly open. Include anyone’s access or reach needs in the brief.

At a cottage, add the practical conditions: an unfinished deck, a sloping approach, seasonal access restrictions or a path that will change during construction. Record what exists now and what the completed project will provide. This gives the designer and supplier a shared problem to solve.

Draw the moving and parked panels

Innotech identifies Defender 76LS and 88LS lift-slide systems. Its product page describes handle-operated lifting followed by sliding, with different panel layouts. Request the drawing for the exact proposed system and arrangement. Review Innotech’s lift-slide product information.

On the elevation, label every fixed and moving panel, the viewing side and the opening direction. On the plan, show where each moving panel sits when open and the resulting clear passage. Have the supplier explain the configuration notation; panel count alone does not tell the household how it will use the opening.

Confirm how handles, screens or proposed shading affect access and the parked position. Treat any requested stacking or pocket arrangement as a question requiring a matching manufacturer drawing and written confirmation.

Coordinate the sill, wall and structure

Ask for a section through the door sill showing the interior finished floor, threshold, exterior surface and intended water-management route. If a low transition matters, have the project team check the applicable product detail alongside access needs and the exterior design. Resolve where water goes and who maintains the drainage route. A sketch showing aligned finishes needs the supporting construction details.

Review the head and jambs too. Name the person responsible for the supporting structure and movement allowances, and the person coordinating the door with flashings, membranes and cladding. Innotech’s dedicated lift-slide manual addresses shop drawings, building interfaces, opening clearances and deflection; it does not supply every project’s wall-interface detail. See the lift-slide installation guide, sections 1.2–1.10.

Have the responsible designer, engineer and relevant authority resolve project-specific requirements. Agree who corrects an unsuitable opening before installation is scheduled.

Specify the glass and visible details

Give the designer your priorities for sunlight, shading, privacy, views and sound. Ask which glass package and coating are proposed for this opening and which supporting performance record applies. Innotech publishes separate 76LS and 88LS drawings for double and triple glazing; confirm the selected package against the quoted system. See the manufacturer’s architectural-resource links.

Record interior and exterior finish references, handle arrangement and locking requirements. Request confirmation of availability and a physical finish sample before approving selections. Keep alternatives separate in the proposal so a change of glass, finish or hardware has a visible scope.

Resolve dimensions and drawing revisions

Keep product dimensions and rough-opening dimensions in separate fields. Mark preliminary sizes clearly and name who measures, reviews and approves the final order. Ask the supplier to confirm the dimensional convention used on its documents rather than applying a familiar window deduction.

Check the permitted configuration and relevant test documentation for the actual proposal. Innotech’s current size-limit sheet separates systems and layouts and includes qualification notes; a headline maximum does not replace that review. Read the size-limit document and notes.

Plan the route from delivery to opening

Share an access sketch and site photographs before agreeing delivery arrangements. Identify the unloading point, ground conditions, turns, slopes, gates and the route to the opening. Ask what packaged dimensions, weights and delivery format the handling planner needs. Confirm the site’s readiness and any access restrictions with the responsible parties.

Assign unloading, equipment selection, movement, storage, inspection and protection in writing. Innotech’s lift-slide manual covers receiving, handling and storage in section 3; the appointed team should use the applicable instructions to prepare its plan. Find the dedicated lift-slide guidance.

Confirm who reports discrepancies and who coordinates replacement or remedial decisions. Ask the supplier to state its delivery scope explicitly.
